In many areas of life, I’m driven by a desire for perfection. That’s why one of my favorite style trends is TECHWEAR (technical wear) and within the industry, I’d say this is my main focus. These items are timeless and made from extremely durable materials. Here, we design for the long term, which points toward the future.

Techwear is not just a fashion trend, but also a visual and functional mindset that manifests in several areas. Here are a few key examples:

Industrial and Product Design
The minimalism, modular thinking, and use of time-tested materials typical of techwear have inspired the design of backpacks, bags, laptop cases, and outdoor gear, for example. These items are often waterproof, sleek, feature many hidden pockets, and offer flexible usage options.

Interior Design and Home Decor
Interiors built around functionality, clean lines, and high-tech solutions—such as modular furniture, dark colors, industrial-style surfaces, and hidden lighting—all evoke the techwear aesthetic. The emphasis is on practicality and ease of rearrangement.

Digital interfaces and UI/UX
The techwear-inspired aesthetic is also evident in the design of websites and apps: clean, geometric layouts, dark mode, high-contrast typography, and data-driven ‘futuristic’ iconography. This style conveys a professional, high-tech feel.

Vehicles and mobility
The spirit of techwear is also evident in the design of electric scooters, bicycles and cars: sharp lines, matt or dark finishes, and compact, modular solutions that reinforce the sense of urban survival.

Pop culture and visual arts
Film posters, video game characters and concept art often draw on the techwear aesthetic – a futuristic, tactical vibe, layered textures and urban settings. This style also fits well with cyberpunk and sci-fi worlds.

The military influence is also hard to ignore. After all, the equipment produced for this sector is developed to the highest standards. Consequently, military gear is reliable, built to last and highly versatile, suitable for use in other areas of life as well as in warfare. This is where the prepper and outdoor lifestyles come into the picture. Nature’s sometimes harsh conditions present people with challenges. It is at times like these that equipment which can even save lives comes into its own. That is why techwear plays an important role in military, survival, mountaineering, underwater, aviation, and even space equipment. Last but not least, it also plays a significant role in the field of healthcare.

It’s important to distinguish between the different trends within techwear, as they each involve different perspectives and expectations. Urban fashion has different demands than the prepper mindset. The former is futuristic and often expensive, while the latter favors the use of natural materials and a simple look. Techwear successfully combines military innovations, outdoor technology and the demands of modern urban life. From a military perspective, many of these solutions are useful, but fashion-focused versions are no substitute for professional tactical gear.

Overall, the most sensible approach is not to focus on fashion or military origins in isolation, but rather on task-oriented equipment and choice: for urban use, techwear can be a comfortable and weather-resistant solution; for hiking, tried-and-tested outdoor systems are the most practical; whilst in military or survival situations, durability, repairability and reliability are more important considerations than a futuristic appearance. Although the three worlds overlap significantly, they follow different priorities; therefore, the best gear is always tailored to the specific environment and task. Of course, effective functionality doesn’t preclude an item from being aesthetically pleasing as well. Since clean, simplified forms dominate here – which often look good by default it’s the designer’s job to ‘fine-tune’ the design to achieve the final consistency. Whenever possible, I always strive for the best visual experience too.
